Exactly 25 years ago, the first public version of the Counter-Strike mod for Half-Life was released, which eventually evolved into an independent competitive game. It was developed by Minh Le and Jess Cliffe, and after 1.5 years, it received official support from Valve.
Le and Cliffe aimed to create a modification focused on realism. The first beta version initially featured four maps: Siege, Prison, Mansion, and Wpndepot. In these maps, the Counter-Terrorist forces played the role of attackers — their objective was to rescue hostages guarded by Terrorists and bring them to a safe area. About six months later, a new bomb-defusal mode was introduced, which became a classic, along with three new maps for it: Nuke, Dust, and Prodigy.
Throughout the shooter’s history, seven versions have been released for online play, one for arcade machines (Counter-Strike Neo), and one for single-player (Counter-Strike: Condition Zero). The latest version, as of the news publication date, is Counter-Strike 2, which replaced CS
on September 27, 2023.
